……………………………..
We are a small, friendly choir based in the City of London. Founded in Hanover Square in 1946, we recently celebrated our 75th anniversary. We perform a wide classical choral repertoire, and have been known to dip our toes in jazz and folk music. For an idea of our repertoire, check out previous performances in our archive.
In addition to our musical activities, we are a very social group. We frequent the pub after every rehearsal and have termly socials featuring a potluck spread and often a raffle to boost choir funds. We have an annual away weekend in September, typically to the seaside, where we’ll explore a new town and give a small concert on the Saturday evening.
Singing with the Hanover Choir is stimulating, challenging and rewarding. Since we are a small choir, every voice matters.

Our Musical Director
Jonathan Pease graduated with an MA in Music from Cambridge University before undertaking further study as a pianist with Graham Fitch.
Jonathan is founder and musical director of the East London Evensong Choir and East London Children’s Choir, reflecting his fierce commitment to music-making in his native east London. He is Director of Music at All Saints Poplar, where he has worked over the past two years to reestablish thriving adult and junior choirs, and also leads a children’s liturgical choir in Bethnal Green, in partnership with local schools and churches.
As an accompanist and repetiteur, he has worked with groups including the Royal Opera House, Garsington Opera, Glyndebourne Youth Opera and the Orpheus Sinfonia, and made the premiere recording of Paul Patterson’s Phoenix Sonata with oboist Nicola Hands. He performs regularly alongside Nicola and saxophonist Alistair Penman, with recording credits including the CDs Light and Shade, Phoenix and Soar.

Jonathan is also a prolific composer and librettist. July 2023 saw the first performance of a new commission for the East London Music Group, telling the story of the 1888 Bow Matchgirls’ Strike: A Fair Field, scored for massed choirs and wind orchestra. July 2024 saw the first performance of a set of love songs for choir, strings and harp, commissioned by the London Docklands Singers. His other output includes four operas and a variety of choral works.

We are affiliated with the National Federation of Music Societies, and a Registered Charity (no 295306). The Choir Constitution is available for download.
